Before we engage in any sporting activity, we are always told that we have to warm up first. Do we really need to do this every time? Can't we just get on and play? Well the simple response is that a warm up session is a crucial part of any sports session and cannot be avoided.
No coach or PE teacher worth their salt would ever encourage athletes to ignore the process of warming up. A sound warm up and stretching session not only prepares the body both physically and mentally for the activity about to be engaged in, but it also aids the strengthening of muscles and thus improves techniques. When we warm up i.e engage in a simple areobic based activity like jogging, the heart starts to pump blood around the body at a faster rate. As a response the pulse increases, breathing quickens and the body starts to become warm (skin turns pink). The increased amount of blood reaching the musces being used, enables the warmed muscles to become pliable.
NOW WE CAN STRETCH!!
Stretches should be held for a count of 12-15. Never bounce when you are stretching as you could tear the muscle or create small tears. Breathe normally and thoroughly stretch the desired muscle/muscle group. By this I mean repeat the stretch at least once, more if you have a weakness (previous injury) or tightness.
You will need to stretch all major muscle groups, so it is best to start at the top (neck) and work down to the ankles.
